No permeate in Betta Milk products
Over the past week, milk processors have been receiving enquiries from the media and their customers following national media coverage claiming that some milk products are being watered down for the purpose of protein standardising and financial gain through the addition of permeate, a lactose by-product.
"I want to assure all Tasmanians that Betta Milk has never been altered in any way by the addition of permeate. We do not own a cheese facility, we don't have access to permeate. And, quite frankly, we don't want access to permeate," said Mark Littler, General Manager of Betta Milk.
While not adding permeate to its products makes it more difficult for Betta Milk to market against its competitors, Mr Littler is adamant that the company will not employ any practice that would compromise the quality of the Betta Milk brand, which he believes has now become a Tasmanian icon.
"Our milk owes its unique profile to the original flavour of regular milk – a taste that has not been altered in any way by the addition of permeate. This is the very essence of our current advertising campaign – Betta Milk, Betta Taste."
